The Valley of the Kings, 1925. A tomb full of gold, a locked gate and a curse. Who killed Sir Barnabas Rooke?

Turn your dinner party into a 1920s expedition. Your guests arrive as eight suspects at a dig camp across the river from Luxor, the morning after the tomb of the Golden Prince was opened. The night before, the Johannesburg gold magnate who paid for it all claimed the credit, the gold and everyone’s secrets, then locked himself inside the tomb with his revolver to guard it. At dawn he’s dead behind the locked gate, and the camp doctor calls it bad air. The workmen call it the curse. Over three rounds the evidence comes out, secrets spill and alibis crack. Then everyone makes an accusation, and the murderer confesses.

What's inside (34 A4 pages)

  • Step-by-step host guide with a checklist, running order and Egyptian food and decor ideas
  • 8 character booklets, each with a secret, an alibi and instructions for every round
  • A photographed cast list and 8 fill-in invitations, with a 1920s costume idea for every suspect
  • A victim file with a portrait of the dearly departed, a one-line send-off and their famous last words
  • 15 evidence cards in three rounds, with envelope labels
  • The opening scene to read aloud
  • Name tags plus 4 police detective badges for extra guests
  • Accusation cards and 6 awards, including Tomb Raider and Walk Like an Egyptian
  • A sealed solution and the murderer's confession

Meet the suspects

Professor Pennefather, who found the tomb and was thanked in a footnote. Lady Cordelia, who married the money, not the man. Daphne, the flapper daughter in love with a drummer. Hassan, the foreman who knows every tomb in the Valley. Marchetti, the Cairo dealer who can sell you anything. Piet, the Johannesburg journalist chasing a better story. Dr Marsh, the calm expedition doctor. And Captain Hollis, the engineer who fitted the gate.

Good to know

  • Players: 6 to 12, made for 8. Have 6 or 7? Use the stand-in statements. More guests? Up to 4 can play Luxor police detectives.
  • Difficulty: ●●●●○ Hard (4 out of 5). The locked gate is not what it seems. Solving it means rethinking how he died, not just who was nearby. Best for experienced players.
  • Time: about 3 hours, including dinner and dessert.
  • Ages: 14+, teens and adults. Mysterious, not gory.
  • Dress code: pith helmets, linen suits, flapper beads and a fez. Perfect for an Egyptian or Gatsby-style evening.
  • The host can play too. No need to read the solution in advance.
  • Instant download: the digital version arrives as a PDF straight after checkout.
  • For personal use. Print as many copies as you need for your own party.
